About Us

Northern Rivers Orthopaedics was established in February 2013 by Dr Shane Prodger, Orthopaedic Surgeon. The practice is located in the Northern New South Wales town of Lismore and services the surrounding areas south to Yamba / Maclean, west to Tenterfield and north to Brunswick Heads / Mullumbimby. Dr Shane Prodger also consults fortnightly in Ballina.  Dr Shane Prodger specialises in surgery of the upper limb particularly shoulder and hand, the lower limb particularly hip and knee, sports and acute orthopaedic conditions.  Special interests of the practice include:

  • Total Joint Replacement Surgery of the hip and knee.
  • Arthroscopic surgery of the knee including ACL reconstruction.
  • Shoulder conditions requiring surgery including rotator cuff tears and recurrent shoulder dislocations requiring stabilisation.

Dr Shane Prodger

Dr Shane Prodger is an Orthopaedic Surgeon who grew up in the Northern Rivers.  After completing his schooling in Lismore he moved to Brisbane where he commenced his University studies.  After completing a degree in Physiotherapy and working both in Australia and overseas as a Physiotherapist for a number of years, he returned to the University of Queensland and completed his Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery in 2002.   After Advanced Orthopaedic Training in Queensland he obtained Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2012.  He was Director of Orthopaedics at Ipswich Hospital, Queensland in 2012 and in 2013 he returned to Lismore and established Northern Rivers Orthopaedics. 

Dr Prodger provides specialist orthopaedic care in areas of sports and acute injuries, upper limb and lower limb orthopaedic conditions.  He has a special interest in sports injuries to the knee and shoulder, joint replacement surgery and reconstructive surgery.

Dr Prodger specialises in the following surgical procedures:

  • Joint replacement of the Knee, Hip and Shoulder
  • Knee Arthroscopy
  • Ligament Reconstruction of the Knee
  • Shoulder surgery
  • Hand surgery
  • Sports Injuries

Dr Prodger works in both the public and private sectors.  He holds a visiting medical officer (VMO) appointment with the Local Northern NSW Health District and operates at the Lismore Base Hospital and the Casino and District Memorial Hospital.  He also operates privately at St Vincent’s Hospital Lismore. 

Dr Prodger is currently the Deputy Chair of The Medical Staff Council for Lismore Base Hospital, and sits on the Medical Appointments Advisory Committee at St Vincent’s Private Hospital, Lismore.   He is an active Member of the Australian Medical Association, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA).

Dr Prodger has an active and ongoing role in teaching and education.  He teaches medical students from The University of Wollongong and The University of Western Sydney, as well as registrars on the AOA training program in Lismore.   

Outside of medicine, Dr Prodger enjoys spending time with his family, and is the proud father of three daughters.  He is a keen golfer and has an avid interest in cricket and rugby league.
