Recommended treatment in the initial 24 – 48 hours of an acute soft tissue sports injury are rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE).
Rest
Rest the affected area of the body by avoiding aggravating activities.
Ice
Application of ice packs over the affected area of the body will assist in decreasing swelling and management of pain. It is recommended that you apply ice packs 15-20 minutes, four times per day. Ice packs should be wrapped in a towel and applied to the skin. An ice pack should never be applied directly to the skin.
Compression
Compression over the affected area of the body such as with the use of bandages can assist in decreasing swelling.
Elevation
Elevation of the affected area of the body above heart level can assist in decreasing swelling and pain.
